6. MY IMAGE OF MYSELF AND MY WORTH AS A PERSON MAY NOT BE THE SAME.
(Before looking at the questions below, take a few minutes to think about this statement. Invite Jesus to speak to you about what He would like you to notice.)
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HOW YOU THINK ABOUT YOURSELF? YOUR SELF-IMAGE?
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORTH?
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU SENSE GOD WOULD LIKE YOU TO CONSIDER?
Every human person has a value or worth that only God fully understands. But every person wants to know their worth and will develop a sense of what they think they are worth. How I perceive myself, my image of myself, reflects my understanding of my worth but it may not be the same as my actual worth.
There are numerous measures I use to evaluate my worth. These may include my family, my culture, my friends, my possessions, or my sense of success. Or I may measure according to what my church teaches about my worth. Or I may evaluate my worth based on how I experience God's view of it. It is important to remember that how I feel about myself and my image of myself most likely isn't an accurate reflection of my worth. We are limited in our ability to fully comprehend how valuable we are. That is why our image of ourselves will always be less than our true worth.
But it is our image of ourselves that affects how we live. It is not enough to just "think greatly about ourselves" because our worth is determined in many ways that we may not be aware of or able to understand. Greatness, as we tend to think of it, may not be what gives us worth. Perhaps a life goal of every person should be to come to understand how valuable we are and what it is that makes us valuable.
